Where Was I When We Went Wrong
Words & Music by Billy Kay

I was there for our first wedding dance
I was there when we made our life's plans
When our hearts were on fire
Burning deep with desire
When pleasure meant just holding hands

But now that you're gone
And I'm left here alone
To wander just where we went wrong

Baby where was I when we went wrong
Did I live in denial
Did I sleep in too long How can love be so fragile
When it starts out so strong
Baby where was I when we went wrong

I remember the first time I held you
And my heart has been faithful since then
How can love be so cruelv Play my heart for a fool
I never thought it would end

Baby where was I when we went wrong
Did I live in denial
Did I sleep in too long
How can love be so fragile
When it starts out so strong
Baby where was I when we went wrong

Where Was I When We Went Wrong Out-Takes

The Moment of Conception
I was giving Jesse a bath and was singing a great song in my head. I was wondering what CD the song was on, and it occured to me it wasn't on any CD - it was in my head!

I wisked Jesse out of the tub and wrapped him in a towel and immedialtely started recording the chorus - without any instruments or a click track - so that I wouldn't forget it by the time Jesse went to bed.

What YOU hear is what I heard in my head 5 minutes after I heard it! It's so cool to hear everything - the background vocals, the piano - everything!

This is also the first time Jesse ever recorded anything - LOL! I can't wait to throw THIS in his face :)

My plan is to have a special version of the finished song that includes Jesse's "vocals", the way it is in this video.

Piano Version the Day After I Wrote It
I originally wrote this on piano and recorded it on my 4-Track recorder. There's no guitars added yet - and I didn't add the bridge yet either. But this is a good example of what the song will sound like.

I deleted the original 2nd verse, to be replaced with the bridge, but left in an extra measure by accident. So it sounds a bit odd right before I get to the chorus.

Piano and Acoustic Guitar
This version I added the acoustic guitar to the piano track to hear what it will sound like.

This version doesn't include the bridge - but the final version will.

There will be 3 guitars on the final version: strumming, finger picking and electric lead guitars.

Just Acoustic Guitar
I added the bridge - a part of the song that doesn't sound like the rest of the song... it add's tension.

It usually comes near the end of a song - I added it after the first verse. I'll see what my producer thinks.

On the piano version of the song, I modulate (change keys) on the last verse. I'll still do that when I record it, but I didn't do it here so as not to upset my neighbors with loud singing :)
