This Time started with a post on Facebook. Someone had posted "Can selflessness be taught?" That was the entire post! I read into it: she's with the wrong man, she's not happy, but is staying put.
Around they same time, all the women I dated all had the same horror stories about their exes. Apparently, all men are evil! Yet they stayed longer then they should have
The idea about how badly men treat women simmered, but I didn't want to write a mean song.
I started dating a wonderful woman. She was beautiful. Intelligent. Driven. Warm. Happy. Then she told me about her ex. It was Jerry Springer material! All I could think of was why she would stay with that man for 15 years.
Then I wondered what her life would have been like if she had chosen someone who reciprocated her love over all those years. She would definitely be a different person today. I wondered in what ways?
That's it! That was the angle I wanted to explore! These were all wonderful women who for whatever reasons, stayed with a man who never told them they were wonderful. How would they have turned out if they had a man who held their hand. Told them they were hot while they were doing the dishes.
I "allude" to what some men do, but focus more on the promise of reciprocal love.
Every woman is special. They play so many roles. They play the hot date in a sequined gown. They play cook. They play mom, maid, mechanic. Therapist. Teacher. Wife. Friend. The list is long. It doesn't take much to say thanks, or to make her feel special, yet most men only seem to remember it on Valentine's Day.
And what the heck. Since I wrote the song, I decided to be the hero :)
This Time Words & Music by Billy Kay
I know your heart’s been hurt before
By lovers in your past
They let you down, they cheated, they lied
But this time will be different
This time it’s gonna’ last
This time love will be on your side
Leave that pain in the past
You've found a love that will last...
This Time
There will be someone who’ll care
This Time
One who’ll always be there
Someone you can count on
To catch you when you fall
Who’ll want you
Whenever you call
You’ll have it all...
This Time
You want someone who’ll hold your hand
When you feel alone
To be there when you just need a friend
To share in all the good times
To help you thru the bad
To love you with a love that won’t end
Leave those worries behind
You found the magic this time...
This Time
They’ll be someone who’ll care
This Time
One who’ll always be there
Someone you can count on
To catch you when you fall
Who’ll want you
Whenever you call
You’ll have it all...
This Time
You've waited for this moment so long
Always knew that he'd come along
Well it's here... it's real... and it's strong
Repeat Chorus
With a love as deep as the sea
This time... that someone... is me

My son Jesse adding the all-important bass slide riff. My dad and I must have played a million times together, and no one ever got it on tape. I now have my son and I on tape forever.
A promo still from the music video. It was about 30 degrees in Vegas that day, a record cold. And I wasn't allowed to show it. My fingers stopped moving half-way through the shoot!
