I did everything I can
Helped you grow into a man
I did the best that I can do
The rest my son, is up to you
So take those lessons that you've learned
Light your fire and let it burn
And when your world seems dark and gray
Let your fire light the way
(Chorus)
Spread your wings and fly
Like an arrow thru the sky
Choose a target, stay on track
Keep the wind behind your back
Let your passions pull you thru
Oooh the rest my son, is up to you
Learn to live and live to love
Keep your faith in God above
He can show you what to do
The mark you make is up to you
Repeat Chorus/Modulate
(Coda)
I did all that I could do
The rest my son, is up to you
The rest my son, is up to you

UP TO YOU - FRONT COVER
My original plan was to record "Up to You" as a "front porch" song - four guys in bib overalls on a porch - just an acoustic guitar, a slide guitar, an old time one-string bass and a washboard.
When I recorded my parts in Seattle, I played two guitars: I finger picked the whole song, and I strummed the song starting at the 2nd verse. So I was already drifting from my front porch plans.
When I got to Las Vegas and Enrique Corro added his guitars, first he added the slide guitar I envisioned. Then I asked if we could try dueling lead solos the way Joe Walsh and Don Felder do on "Hotel California"... and it worked. I kept it in.
Then he devised a muted low bassy riff that can best be described as resembling the guitar on "Every Breath You Take". It worked. I kept it.
Then he added one more electric guitar to fill any holes left by the other guitars. Since the plan called for no drums, the last thing he recorded was an acoustic rhythm to substitute for the drums.
Gene Sironen added the bass guitar, and a light brush on a snare to substitute for a washboard, which we couldn't find anywhere. And he also snuck in a 4th vocal harmony when I wasn't looking - LOL
After listening to the finished product, I decided it needed drums. So it's not a full production Nashville song, but it's also not the raw 4 instruments on a porch I originally wanted, but it works. It's a keeper. Hope you enjoy it.
